BASIC SOCKS

MATERIALS
2 skeins of sock yarn
Set of 5 double point needles, various US sizes: 1, 1 1/2, 2
Recommended Yarn: Dyed Jems Sock Yarn

SIZES
For Ladies: #1 CO 64 sts, #1 CO 60 sts, #2 CO 56 sts
For Men: #2 CO 64 sts

CUFF
CO 56, (60, 64) sts
Work k2, p2 rib for 19 rows. (20 rows total including CO row)

LEG
Work in St st for 50, (60, 70) rows (Approximately 7 inches)

HEEL FLAP
Knit sts from needle 1 onto needle 4 [28, (30, 32) stitches on needle 4] Ignore stitches on Needles 2 & 3
Row 1: Sl 1 stitch purlwise, p27, (29, 31)
Row 2: *Sl 1 stitch knitwise, k1* repeat until end of row
Repeat these 2 rows for a total of 13, (14, 15) times
Last Row: Repeat Row 1 [27, (29, 31) rows total in heel]

TURN HEEL
K16, (17, 18), ssk, k1, turn.
Wrong Side: Sl 1 purlwise, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Right Side: Sl 1 purlwise, k6, ssk, k1, turn.
Next Row: Sl 1 purlwise, knit or purl to 1 stitch before the gap, SSK or p2tog closing gap, k1or p1, turn. (choice is given for a right or wrong side row)
Continue this last row until there is not a gap. [16, (18, 18) stitches left on needle]

GUSSET
K sts on needle 4.
Row 1: Pick up and knit 15, (16, 17) sts from slipped stitches on left side of heel flap. M1 between needles 1 & 2 and add to needle 1. [16, (17, 18) stitches on Needle 1] Knit across needles 2 & 3. M1 between needle 3 and right heel flap and add to soon to be needle 4. Pick up and knit 15, (16, 17) sts from slipped stitches on right side of heel flap. Knit 8, (9, 9) stitches from needle 5 (old needle 4) onto new needle 4. Slip the rest of the stitches from needle 5 onto needle 1.
Row 2: Knit until 3 stitches are left on needle 1, k2tog, k1, knit across needle 2 & 3, k1 on needle 4, ssk, knit the rest of stitches on needle 4.
Row 3: Knit all stitches
Repeat the last 2 rows until there are 14, (15, 16) stitches once again on Needles 1 & 4.

FOOT
Knit until sock measures 2 inches less than the length of your foot. For Size 8- 8 1/2 this is 7- 71/2 inches from back of heel.

ROUNDED TOE
For Rows 1,2,3,5,6,8,9,11,13,15 knit all stitches
For Rows 4, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16 Needle 1: knit until 3 stitches before end, k2tog, k1. Needle 2: k1, ssk, knit to end of needle. Needle 3: Repeat Needle 1. Needle 4: Repeat Needle 2.
After Row 16 Continue the decreasing row until there are 16 stitches left. Knit stitches from needle 1 onto needle 4. Slip stitches from needle 2 onto needle 3. Graft remaining stitches together.

GRAFTING
Holding the 2 needles parallel with wrong sides of fabric together, thread a blunt tapestry needle with yarn end and work as follows: Insert needle as if to purl into the first stitch on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into the first stitch on the back piece. Then follow steps 1-4 as outlined below. 1) Insert it as if to knit through the first st on the front needle and let the st drop from the needle. 2) Insert the needle into the second st on the front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle. 3) Insert the needle into the first st on the back needle as if to purl and let it drop from the needle, then 4) insert it as if to knit through the second st on the back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle. Repeat 1-4 until all sts are gone. When finished, adjust tension as necessary. Weave in ends.
